To say that we are a technology driven society would be an understatement. And while there are many examples of how industries rely on the latest technology, a look at how transportation brokers plan the delivery of every product that we use in our home is certainly a starting point. From the transition from manual types of load boards to the digital types of load boards provided by transportation management software platforms, everything from the cars that we drive to the eggs that we eat depend on timely delivery.
In this digital age, freight brokers are able to not only manage and oversee the delivery of full trucks of next year’s hottest Christmas toy to less than load (LTL) deliveries of single clothing items ordered online by consumers across the country, software programs are at the heart of these entire systems.
With build in calculations for how soon items need to be ordered to make sure that products arrive on time, transportation brokers and managers alike are able to determine the cost of delivery for all of the items, both large and small, that consumers use. In fact, the nation’s economy depends on these processes and programs. For instance, whether it is full truckload, LTL, or parcel, the U.S. e-commerce revenue is about $423.3 billion and is steadily climbing. This means that transportation carriers are being forced to adjust to changes in the retail industry. These adjustments are far easier to make if a company is using the latest technology platforms that are available.
Although these current numbers are significant, it should come as no surprise that as more retailers are closing the doors of their brick and mortar buildings, the e-commerce industry will continue to expand. As an example, the value of freight moved is expected to increase from $882 per ton in 2007 to $1,377 per ton in 2040, according to the U.S. Department of Transportation.
Summer is just around the corner in many parts of the country and as consumers order the latest pool toy or lawn care product online it will be the transportation industry that will be working behind the scenes to make sure that alll of those items arrive on time.
